Wedding photographer in Beaulieu-sur-Mer

One quarter of Beaulieu is called the Petite Afrique, and it is not a marketing phrase. The town is sheltered by a cliff that blocks the north, and banana trees grow there.

That microclimate has a direct consequence for a wedding: Beaulieu stays workable in winter and early spring, when the rest of the Riviera cools down. Few couples know it.

I photograph a wedding the way you cover an event: present, discreet, attentive to what happens. In the Petite Afrique, what happens can be a wedding in February, sheltered by the cliff, while the rest of the Riviera waits for spring.

Villa Kérylos

An ancient Greek house, reconstructed at the water's edge in the early twentieth century by an archaeologist who wanted to live as people did in the fifth century before our era.

Columns, mosaics, a peristyle, marble, and the sea through every opening. It is a setting without equivalent in France, and it produces images nothing else can: a white dress in a peristyle of white marble, with the Mediterranean behind.

The villa is a listed monument, with conditions of its own, arranged directly with the site. The light is the real subject there: it enters through the inner courts and turns through the day, which means knowing what hour to be where.

The Baie des Fourmis

It opens between the villa and the point, with its promenade, its pines and its very clear water. It faces southeast, so it takes the morning full on and softens through the afternoon.

That is the opposite of most neighbouring towns, and it means a couple session can happen early in the day here, which suits weddings with a late ceremony.

The position, between Nice and Monaco

Beaulieu sits exactly halfway, a quarter of an hour from each, on the lower corniche. Villefranche is five minutes away, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat three, Èze ten.

For a wedding that draws on several towns, it is the most practical anchor point on this stretch of coast. The railway station lets guests arrive from Nice or Monaco without a car, which settles the parking question.

How to build a couple session here

In three short stages, without a transfer. The harbour and its boats, the promenade along the Baie des Fourmis, and if access allows, the surroundings of Villa Kérylos.

The whole thing takes thirty minutes on foot, which is rare on this coast and leaves room to breathe between two series.

What happens if it rains?

The reception moves into the indoor spaces of your venue. For the couple session I would rather reschedule it for another day, later that week or beyond. You get your images in the light you had in mind, without cutting into your celebration.

Either side of the town, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat pushes its peninsula and the nine gardens of the Villa Ephrussi out to sea, and Villefranche-sur-Mer keeps the Rue Obscure under its old town, five minutes each way. Monaco is a quarter of an hour further east, and many of its couples come here for the couple session.
