Wedding photographer in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

A peninsula two kilometres long, surrounded by water on three sides, covered in pines and in properties you cannot see from the road.

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is one of the few places on the French Riviera where the sea is everywhere and the crowds are nowhere. For a wedding, that is worth more than any view.

Trained as a press photographer, I make wedding reportages. On the peninsula of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the sea is on three sides and the crowds are nowhere, which leaves the whole reportage to the couple and their guests.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Pink, set on the narrowest ridge of the cape, with sea on both sides and nine themed gardens descending in terraces.

It is an extraordinarily structured place, and that structure imposes its own discipline. The perspectives are drawn, the alleys frame themselves, and a photographer who wanders at random misses the point. The French garden, with its basin and fountains, is the most photographed part of the villa, and deservedly so.

Two things to plan for: the visitor numbers, which are high during the day, and the light, which hits the pink façade hard around midday. Early morning and late afternoon change everything.

Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat

At the southern tip, in grounds of several hectares running down to the sea. Discretion is the rule, and coordination with the hotel is arranged in advance.

What the place offers, and few others can: direct access to the water from the grounds, and complete seclusion. Nobody passes through.

The coastal path

It circles the peninsula, it is public, and it gives access to coves and rocks that nothing else can match for a couple session.

It asks for walking and proper shoes. Allow ten to twenty minutes depending on where you join it. This is the moment when the two of you will be alone, with no guests waiting, and many couples tell me afterwards that those minutes were the only ones of the day that belonged to them.

Orientation, and what it decides

Because the peninsula is surrounded by water, you can choose your light here: the western shore faces Villefranche and the sunset, the eastern shore faces Beaulieu and takes the morning.

That is a rare luxury on this coast, where most towns have only one aspect. In practice it means a couple session can happen at any hour here, provided you stand on the right side.

What happens if it rains?

The reception moves indoors, and the venues on the cape are of a very high standard. The coastal path, however, becomes unusable.

For the couple session, I would rather reschedule it for another day, later that week or beyond. Here more than anywhere, the whole value of the place lies at the water's edge.

Beaulieu-sur-Mer sits at the neck of the peninsula, sheltered enough to work in winter; Villefranche-sur-Mer and its deep bay are five minutes on; and many couples marrying in Monaco, twenty minutes east, come here for the last hour of light.

Can we have a civil ceremony in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat? The town hall celebrates it, and it looks onto the harbour. It is one of the most pleasant places on this coast to walk out of as a married couple.

Does Villa Ephrussi host weddings? It offers private hire, under conditions specific to the site and its status as a listed property. That is arranged directly with them.

Is the coastal path manageable in wedding dress? The path is walkable in a dress, with a change of shoes and a route chosen in advance.

How far is Nice or Monaco? About fifteen minutes each way outside high season, along the lower corniche.

Should we be worried about booking late? For Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, twenty-two months ahead is the sensible figure, and it is the earliest I recommend anywhere on this coast. The peninsula holds very few venues for the demand it attracts, and a Saturday between May and September rarely survives a year of hesitation.
