Wedding photographer at Cap Estel

A private peninsula between Monaco and Nice, surrounded by water on three sides. An infinity pool that merges into the sea. Fireworks over the water at midnight, for twenty guests or for two hundred.

Cap Estel is one of the few places on the French Riviera where a whole wedding day holds together on site, from the morning through to lunch the following day, without anyone needing to leave once.

I come from press photography, and I never really left it. On a peninsula where the whole wedding holds together on site, from the morning to lunch the next day, that habit of staying present pays off hour after hour.

The full day, in one place

This is what genuinely sets the place apart, and it is worth setting out in detail.

The symbolic ceremony is held on a terrace facing the sea. Cocktails move to a second terrace, which avoids the closed-room feeling you get elsewhere when everything happens in one spot. Dinner is served in the garden.

The couple session happens in the grounds, without getting back into a car, and that changes everything: you do not lose forty minutes of travel out of the best hour of the day.

The infinity pool gives one of the finest images of the place, at dusk, when the water line merges with the horizon.

And the private beach below opens something else again: the next day, lunch on the sand with games, in an atmosphere that has nothing to do with the day before. Those are often the most relaxed images of the whole series.

The indoor fallback, and why it matters

The interiors at Cap Estel allow the whole day to move inside if it rains, and they are handsome enough that nobody experiences it as second best.

That is rare at this level. Most seafront venues stake everything on the outdoors and retreat into a characterless room. Here the day changes setting without losing quality.

Aspect and timing

The estate occupies a point pushing out into the sea, with water to the east, south and west. You can therefore choose your light according to where you stand, which few venues allow.

In practice the last hour before sunset is the strong moment, with the sun dropping behind Cap-d'Ail and the sea taking its colour. The gardens hold shade longer than the terraces, which makes them usable earlier in the afternoon in high summer.

Getting there

Cap Estel is at Èze-Bord-de-Mer, on the lower corniche, a quarter of an hour from Monaco and about twenty minutes from Nice outside high season.

The road is the only one and it loads up in summer. For guests arriving from Nice airport, allow generously, and more still on a Saturday in July. Èze-sur-Mer station is a few minutes away, which settles the parking question for anyone who prefers the train.

How I work there

At a venue that holds everything on site, my role shifts slightly. There is less logistics and more real time, which means more scenes and fewer transitions.

I encourage couples to use that advantage rather than fill it. A lighter running order than elsewhere produces better images, because people stay put, settle in, and forget the camera.

Are fireworks possible? The estate allows fireworks over the water. Conditions and permissions are arranged directly with the hotel.

What happens if it rains? The interiors take over, and they are of an unusual standard. For the couple session, we reschedule it for another day if conditions are genuinely poor.

When should a date here be settled? Around twenty months ahead for a summer Saturday. Cap Estel carries the whole day and the following morning on site, and a property that holds guests overnight fills earlier than one that empties at midnight.
