Wedding photographer in Fréjus

Fréjus is the only town on the Var coast with two thousand years on its neighbours.

Forum Julii was a Roman naval base, and what remains is an arena, a theatre, an aqueduct and a medieval cathedral with its cloister. No other town nearby offers that depth of stone, and for a wedding reportage it changes things: you find settings here that have an age, not merely a view.

I am a documentary photographer, and I make wedding reportages. In Fréjus, the reportage has two thousand years of stone to work with, an arena, a cathedral and a cloister that still works at two in the afternoon.

The episcopal city and the cloister

The episcopal group brings together the cathedral, the baptistery and the cloister with its superimposed galleries. It is a listed site, and access for a reportage follows its own rules, checked in advance.

What it offers is rare on this coast: shade, ancient stone, and light falling from above into the covered walk. In high summer, when the coastline becomes unworkable in the middle of the day, it is one of the only places in the area where you can photograph at two in the afternoon.

The upper galleries deserve a mention of their own. Their painted wooden ceiling carries hundreds of small figures, and the level above the walk gives an elevated angle that no ground-floor cloister allows.

Villa Aurélienne

It stands above the town in its park, a nineteenth-century villa surrounded by pines and cedars. The park is large, the perspectives long, and the villa itself provides an architectural backdrop the wine estates do not have.

It is a municipal property, which brings particular conditions of use, arranged with the town.

The estates, between sea and Estérel

Domaine du Clos des Roses, on the edge of Fréjus, combines vines, outdoor spaces and reception rooms. Château du Rouët, at Le Muy, twenty minutes away, offers a park, a fountain and fine tall trees for a symbolic ceremony, with two separate areas for cocktails and the evening.

Westwards, the Estérel massif closes the horizon, and its red rock gives the end of the day a colour the rest of the coast does not have. The heart of the massif closes in summer for fire safety, but the corniche and the coves stay accessible and are more beautiful anyway.

The Base Nature and the seafront

The former naval air station, now a park, offers dozens of hectares of open ground at the water's edge, with runways, grass and the horizon. It is an unusual, strongly graphic setting that few weddings use.

Fréjus beaches are long and face south, which means the sun sets to the west, behind the Estérel. The light reddens on the rock before it disappears, and that is the best moment of the day.

Combining the old town and the seafront

By separating them. Fréjus is spread out, and the historic centre sits several kilometres from the beach.

The pattern that works: preparations and ceremony in the upper town, couple session late in the day on the corniche or in a cove, reception at an estate. That makes two transfers, which is acceptable provided each one is counted generously.

What happens if it rains?

The cloister and the interiors of the episcopal city offer an option most coastal towns do not have, subject to agreement. The reception, meanwhile, moves into your chosen estate's indoor spaces.

For the couple session I would rather reschedule it for another day, later that week or beyond. You get your images in the light you had in mind.

Saint-Raphaël is the next town along, where I live and where the Estérel turns orange at dusk; Cannes is forty minutes east, Saint-Tropez and Pampelonne an hour west by the coast road outside the season.

Frequently asked questions

Can we photograph in the cloister and the Roman monuments? These sites are listed and apply their own conditions. It is requested in advance, and it is feasible.

How far is Saint-Raphaël or Sainte-Maxime? Ten minutes from Saint-Raphaël, the two towns adjoin. Half an hour from Sainte-Maxime outside high season.

When is the best season? May to October. July and August are beautiful but very busy, and traffic between the centre and the seafront becomes difficult.

Do you travel to Le Muy, Roquebrune-sur-Argens and Puget? Regularly. The whole eastern Var is part of my usual area.

Are we leaving it too late? Fourteen months ahead is comfortable for Fréjus. The heart of the Estérel closes in summer for fire risk, which pushes outdoor weddings towards the same handful of weeks and tightens those particular dates.
