Wedding photographer at the Château du Font du Broc
An olive grove for the ceremony, vines for the couple session, and reception rooms that hold their own against any lowland château.
Château du Font du Broc stands at Les Arcs-sur-Argens, in the Var hinterland, half an hour from Saint-Raphaël and Fréjus. It is a working wine estate before it is a venue, and that shows in everything it offers.
A wedding is documented. That is how I approach it. At the Font du Broc, the olive grove, the vines and the reception rooms give three chapters in one place, and the working estate around them supplies the details no decorator would think of.
The olive grove
This is what sets the estate apart from the other wine properties in the area.
A symbolic ceremony under olive trees looks like nothing else. The foliage filters the light instead of blocking it, which avoids the hard contrast of ceremonies held in open sun. Guests do not squint, and faces stay readable to the back row.
The olive also has a quality I use systematically: its leaves are pale underneath and dark on top. One breath of wind and the whole background changes value. No two images from the same ceremony repeat themselves.
The vines
They rise around the estate and give the couple session what gardens cannot: lines.
The rows create a natural depth, a perspective that organises the picture without anything being composed. Late in the day, when the sun comes in low, they cast their shadows and the relief appears.
That is the hour to reserve. A session in the vines at three in the afternoon gives nothing: the light falls vertically and everything flattens. An hour before sunset, it is another place.
The reception rooms
The estate has very fine rooms, and that is what makes it workable all year. An October wedding here succeeds as well as one in June, because the wet-weather plan costs nothing in quality.
That matters more than people think in the Var hinterland, where late summer storms are real and arrive quickly.
The gardens
They complete the olive grove and the vines with a third register, more composed and closer to the buildings. They serve the cocktail hour well and allow a short couple session when the running order is tight.
An estate offering three distinct settings without a transfer is rare, and it is Font du Broc's main asset for a reportage.
How a day is built here
Usually entirely on site. Symbolic ceremony in the olive grove, cocktails in the gardens, dinner indoors or outdoors depending on the season, couple session in the vines at the end of the day.
When the civil ceremony takes place elsewhere, at Saint-Raphaël, Fréjus or Les Arcs, allow twenty to forty minutes depending on the hour and season.
What happens if it rains?
The rooms take over, and they are handsome enough that nobody experiences it as second best. For the couple session in the vines, I would rather reschedule it for another day: the ground becomes unusable and the light has gone.
